http://diaryofmydivorce.blogspot.com/2007/06/christine-aparece-wished-she-had-made.html
"Over the course of my lifetime I’ve wavered on the topic of capital
punishment but I have to say that if ever there were crimes that cried
for the ultimate justice, these are those offenses and Johnson has more
than earned his participation in an appropriate use of the death
penalty.
There are just some crimes that are so monstrous that
they cry for a swift and severe consequence and nothing less than death
will do. There are times when it simply doesn’t matter whether or not
rehabilitation is a possibility and this is one of those times. If
sometime in the year 2014 some moronic Hollywood celebrity puts on a
concert to save the murdering rapist who was convicted of killing the
two young people, it would be an affront to decent people everywhere."
i have also wavered but i have to agree here. the media focus is mainly on the young couple whom they tortured. there were actually 4 victims in total, plus one that got away, no thanks to dexter. if you put yourself in her place, or in her family's place, it's really hard to go against the verdict here.
if you don't know, this is regarding the trial of dexter johnson and his accomplices who went on a rampant crime spree. not only did they carjack 4 different victims, they killed all but one (take the car. why murder?). when it came to the young couple, the most common version of the story is that they forced the boy to get on his knees, raped the girl in front of the boy while taunting him, made her walk out into a field naked, and shot them both in the head while they were on their knees. i didn't know her, but i have friends who did and she made a tremendous impact on their lives.
life imprisonment seems the more appropriate punishment at times, allowing an opportunity for a turnaround. dexter johnson and his friends haven't shown the tiniest morsel of regret throughout the ordeal and seem only infuriated that they were caught. every police officer who has had to deal with them has said they were the most coldblooded killers they've ever seen. yes, people should be given an opportunity for a turnaround, and he'll have (arguably) more time than he deserves... all the way up to his execution.
